What should society do for “uncivilized cultures” like the Sawi?
The best thing society can do for a culture like the Sawi is to introduce to them our own culture and give them awareness of what the modern world is like. It wouldn't be right for society to force them to change and make them become more modern. They could be content with life. Many people don't like change, and the Sawi might not either. We should let them know how we live and leave it up to them if they want to change or not. I do think we should stop the cannibalism though.

Jason,
I think, and Don Richardson makes this point later, that if it hadn't been the missionaries it would have been someone else. In many cases, the untouched tribes were first met by traders and people who wanted to exploit them for labor or work and ultimately their cultures ended up decimated. I think that D.Richardson would argue that the Christians did not destroy their culture but provided them with a new stability they had never experienced through the Gospel which helped them cope when the outside world began to encroach on their tribe.
Hi Jason.
Your voice is very strong in this short blog entry. If we give them awareness of what the modern society is like, do you think it would change anything? I think we should enforce the modern culture; I don't mean that we should destroy their culture, but we should strongly suggest them to change by the moral of this world. What if they firmly persist on their culture? I would certainly not feel comfortable knowing that headhunting is still practiced somewhere in this world.
Hey Jason
I agree with your point that we as 'civilized cultures' shouldn't force the Sawi to accept our modernized world view. Don't you think that if we just leave the Sawi to decide on this matter, they will just persist on what they have beleived for many years?
